After the disappointing announcement that the NEOGEO AES+ has been delayed until September 16, 2027, PLAION finally has something positive to show.

The first photos of the Tokyo Game Show booth are now out, and this is exactly the kind of update I wanted to see: real hardware, real cartridges, multiple playable stations, and a booth clearly prepared for visitors to actually test the system.

The photos already make the project feel much more real.

In the first images, we can see a long line of SNK-branded demo stations, each with a monitor, controller setup, stools, and large illuminated game artwork above them. The presentation looks clean and professional, with titles such as Mark of the Wolves, Pulstar, Metal Slug and others highlighted across the booth.

Another photo shows a central Metal Slug display area, surrounded by additional AES+ stations and large backlit game posters. It gives the booth more of an arcade-showroom feeling rather than simply a product display.

One of the most interesting pictures is the cartridge lineup. PLAION is showing several physical Neo Geo-style cartridges together, and among them is a very important surprise:

Zero Wing Is Coming to Neo Geo???

Zero Wing was originally released by Toaplan in 1989 as an arcade horizontal shooter.

It is not a new game historically, but it is new to the Neo Geo platform, because Zero Wing was never officially released for Neo Geo during the original system’s lifetime.

That makes this announcement much more interesting than simply reissuing another existing AES title.

The original Zero Wing arcade PCB used a Motorola 68000 main CPU, with a Z80 handling sound duties, along with Yamaha audio hardware. Its graphics hardware supported multiple scrolling layers, sprites, parallax effects, and the kind of fast arcade action Toaplan became famous for.

Seeing a game like this adapted to Neo Geo raises an interesting possibility: maybe AES+ will become more than just a way to replay the existing library.

If PLAION starts bringing classic arcade games that never originally appeared on Neo Geo to the platform, that could make the AES+ library much more interesting.

Conclusion

After the bad news surrounding the 2027 delay, I see this Tokyo Game Show presentation as a good start and a little bit of relief.

The booth looks great, the hardware is being shown publicly, and Zero Wing coming to Neo Geo is exactly the type of surprise I wanted to see.

But I still expect more.

One new game and a good-looking booth do not erase a one-year delay.

When the show fully opens to the public, I want to see what regular players say about the hardware, controllers, video quality, performance, and overall experience.

And most importantly, I want PLAION to show us more games. If Zero Wing is really opening the door to ports that never existed on AES/NEOGEO before, that could be one of the most exciting parts of this whole project. The AES+ could become more than a revival console — it could actually expand the Neo Geo library.

For now:

Good start. Much better than another apology.

But after everything that happened, I’m still expecting PLAION to give the community a lot more before September 2027.
