1 million Genesis consoles were sold in the US during 1990. The Genesis made huge gains over Nintendo during the console’s first couple of years, although for many it was assumed that the successor, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (or Super NES, as it is officially abbreviated by Nintendo), would reclaim its crown upon release.
